Fall 2024
4th grade Newsletter
Hello 4th Grade Families,
We hope the post-Halloween crash is over in your home, if you celebrated Halloween.
ELA
We are in Unit 2 of Module 2, Animal Defense Mechanisms. In this unit students are working on becoming experts about one animal from the four we have learned about, the armadillo, ostrich, monarch butterfly, and springbok. Students will research their animal and write an informational piece about it. This writing will become the introduction to the culminating activity of the module, where students write a choose-your-own-adventure story about their animal. We are very excited to see the stories the students write!
Math
We are nearing the end of Unit 2: Fraction Equivalence and Comparisons. We have been working on finding equivalent fractions, comparing fractions and using a number line to represent fractions. At home it will be helpful to talk with your child about how they know two fractions are alike or different and have them explain the strategies they used to find equivalent fractions. The next section in this unit will be comparing fractions that have different numerators and different denominators using various strategies.
Social Studies / Theme Studies
In Social Studies, the upcoming presidential election has been a big topic. We will continue to have conversations with the students about the election and its results.
Our next couple of lessons will be around maps- the different types of maps and their features. Some different kinds we’ll learn about are physical and political maps. Students will learn how to read a map key or legend, identify direction, and “read” the map for information. We encourage you to point maps out to your child if you’re on the subway or a city bus. Ask what kind of information can be learned from the map, or what its purpose is.
Reminders
Student Led Conferences will begin Thursday, November 7th. This day is a half day for students. Dismissal is at 11:45. With so many things going on, be sure to set a reminder for the day and time you signed up for. If there are any questions or need to reschedule, reach out to your child’s teacher right away.
All our best,
The 4th Grade Team

Erica is a native New Yorker and graduate of Howard University in Washington D.C., with a B.S. in Psychology, and also holds a M.S. in Education from Sarah Lawrence College. She is also a graduate of Laughing Lotus Yoga School and Kane School of Core Integration in NYC. She has studied with many great Vinyasa, Iyengar and Pilates teachers over the years which has helped to shape and inspire her own practice and teaching style.
Erica teaches a dynamic vinyasa practice where she carefully instructs the integral alignment of each pose, while using creative sequencing and focusing on the breath. In this intelligent vinyasa class, geometry and architecture of each asana are a big part of her instruction, yet there is still time to find the flow and moving meditation often set to a curated musical playlist. Although this class can be challenging, it can also be modified for beginners. Students strengthen the ability to focus and sharpen the mind, while fine tuning awareness, proprioception, intuition, and attention. There is often a fun and philosophical approach. It is always advised that you go at your pace, honor your capabilities, and listen to your body.
TESTIMONIALS:
"Today's yoga class with Erica (sub for Samantha) was one of the most amazing yoga classes I have EVER taken. It would be so great if she had a regular slot or two at Equinox on 54th st. I am sure I am not the only member who feels this way. She is amazing. Her voice, her professionalism, her style of teaching are distinct and would make a great addition to your teaching team". - Equinox Member, February 2017
"Hi there - just wanted to write and say how much I enjoyed a yoga class today taught by a sub named Erica Robinson. She's the best yoga instructor I've had by miles — in particular, she paid really close attention to the students in class and was responsive to what we were doing, whereas the typical instructor has their schtick but is more or less oblivious to the real time practice of the people in the studio that day. I understand you guys sometimes take this kind of feedback into account in setting schedules and in moving subs to permanent slots. I'd love to see Erica brought on more regularly. Thanks!" - Equinox Member, June 2016
"Erica is patient and sweet; she explains very clearly and calmly how to properly do the poses. The studio has very positive, down to earth vibes. Asali is a hidden gem for sure." - Asali Yoga Student, March 2016
